Tracer dispersal in sandy sediment porewater under enhanced physical forcing

چکیده
This research (1) integrated a fluorescent dye injection and monitoring system for measuring the mixing of a fluorescent dye tracer (fluorescein) in permeable (sandy) sediments with a cabled ocean observatory, Kilo Nalu, Oahu, Hawaii, and (2) used this system to conduct remotely controlled in situ measurements of wave-enhanced porewater mixing in a physically well-characterized wave-dominated setting. Laboratory results indicated that the fiber-optic sensor is effective at measuring fluorescence-traced enhanced mixing in sandy sediments. Observed dye mixing, driven by paddle-generated surface waves in a laboratory wave channel was 2–3 orders of magnitude greater than molecular diffusion, and decreased with depth in the sediments. Similarly, field experiments used a remotely controlled submersible syringe pump for fluorescent tracer injection into sediment that was monitored with a fiber-optic sensor. These experiments were carried out at 10m water depth, with mean wave heights of 0.3–1.5m and periods of 15 s. At 15 cm sediment depth, transport rates of 0–5 cmh 1 were measured, with maximum dispersion coefficients 2–3 orders of magnitude faster than sedimentary molecular diffusion. Hydrodynamic measurements collected simultaneously via Kilo Nalu correlated with porewater transport, with significant wave height and diffusion having the strongest covariation. r 2007 Elsevier Ltd. Submersible-operated porewater sampler for permeable sediments
A sampler was developed to collect porewater from permeable (sandy) sediments during manned-submersible operations. The sampler uses vacuum (or atmospheric-pressure) reservoirs to draw porewater into a sediment probe and then into inline sample loops. The sampler is relatively inexpensive, easy to construct, and selfcontained, operating without an external power supply. The sample-loop/reservoi...
متن کاملProduction and consumption of dimethylsulfide (DMS) and dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) in a diatom-dominated intertidal sediment
Intertidal sediments usually contain a high amount of dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) and therefore represent environments with a potentially high emission of dimethylsulfide (DMS). However, knowledge on production and release of DMSP in intertidal sediments is limited. Here, we present data on the diel variation of the total DMS and DMSP content (DMS[P]total) and the DMS(P) concentration in ...
متن کاملReactive Transport Modeling of Subaqueous Sediment Caps and Implications for the Long-Term Fate of Arsenic, Mercury, and Methylmercury.
A 1-D biogeochemical reactive transport model with a full set of equilibrium and kinetic biogeochemical reactions was developed to simulate the fate and transport of arsenic and mercury in subaqueous sediment caps. Model simulations (50 years) were performed for freshwater and estuarine scenarios with an anaerobic porewater and either a diffusion-only or a diffusion plus 0.1-m/year upward advec...
متن کاملSpatial structure of the microbial community in sandy carbonate sediment
The environmental conditions in permeable carbonate sands are in many ways different from those in fine-grained sediments, but little is known about how this affects the structure and composition of the microbial community. We studied the microbial community structure in relation to the geochemical zonation within a 4 m2 patch of a sandy carbonate sediment in Kane’ohe Bay, O’ahu, Hawaii. Porewa...
متن کاملToxicity and toxicokinetics of cadmium in Capitella sp. I: Relative importance of water and sediment as routes of cadmium uptake
The Importance of dissolved versus sediment-bound cadmium as uptake routes for the deposit-feeding polychaete Capitella species I and the toxicity and toxicokinetlcs of cadmium from these exposure routes were investigated. Effects were reported as changes in worm growth rate, egestion rate and allometry. Radioactive cadmium (""'Cd) was used as a tracer to examine the uptake (5 d) and subsequent...
